by John James Audubon

About 15 h 30 min of reading190 chapters

Ornithological Biography was the text that John James Audubon wrote to accompany the great plates of his Birds of America, and this second volume was published in Edinburgh in 1834. Each entry describes the habits of a bird as Audubon had observed them in the field, from the raven, blue jay and pileated woodpecker to the Mississippi kite, snowy owl and shore lark, with notes on the plants painted beside it. Between the bird chapters he placed sketches of American life and scenery drawn from his travels, among them "The Runaway," "The Lost One," "The Force of the Waters," "The Squatters of the Mississippi" and a Fourth of July barbecue in Kentucky. It is natural history told in the first person. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
