One Wonderful Night: A Romance of New York
One Wonderful Night, published in 1912, packs its whole plot into a single evening. John Delancey Curtis, an engineer arriving in New York from China, witnesses a murder outside his hotel and finds a marriage license in the dead man's coat. Within hours he has gone to the address on the license, married the English girl named in it to save her from a forced match, knocked down a rival, defied her father and dined with the chief of police, while the real story behind the killing closes in. Louis Tracy writes with speed and good humor; the book was quickly filmed with Francis X. Bushman as Curtis, and this edition carries the publisher's note on that production. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
