Odysseus, the Hero of Ithaca
Adapted from the Third Book of the Primary Schools of Athens, Greece
Odysseus, the Hero of Ithaca is a retelling of the Odyssey for children, adapted from a reader used in the primary schools of Athens, translated by the historian Zénaïde A. Ragozin and edited by the American educator Mary E. Burt. It opens with the background of the Trojan War, Paris and Helen, the sailing of the Greeks and the fall of Troy, then follows Odysseus from Calypso's island to the Phaeacians, where he tells of the Lotus-eaters, the Cyclops, Aeolus, Circe and the descent to Hades, and finally home to Ithaca. The language is simple and the episodes short, keeping much of Homer's directness. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
