Myths of China and Japan, published in 1923, is one of the series of volumes on world mythology that Donald A. Mackenzie wrote for the Gresham Publishing Company. Its thesis is that Chinese civilization was not a thing apart but received ideas, crafts and beliefs from western Asia and beyond, and Mackenzie reads the myths for traces of that transmission: the dragon and the serpent, the Isles of the Blest in the eastern ocean, P'an Ku and the mythical ages, the mother goddess, jewels, pearls and the plant of life, color and metal symbolism, the barge of death and the cult of the stars. Later chapters turn to Japan, and color plates after paintings and photographs illustrate the volume. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
