Flammarion, best known for his popular books on the heavens, describes sittings he attended himself, above all with the Italian medium Eusapia Paladino, and collects reports from other European scientists who studied her and other mediums. He discusses fraud openly and does not accept the spiritualist explanation as proven, arguing instead that unknown natural forces, perhaps linked to the human organism, deserve study by science.
