Mr. Standfast
Richard Hannay, now a brigadier general, is pulled out of the trenches in 1917 and sent to pose as a pacifist in a Cotswold garden city, where a German agent is working inside Britain's anti-war circles. The trail leads him through Glasgow, the Scottish Highlands, the Alps and finally back to the Western Front in the spring of 1918. Along the way he meets Mary Lamington, who becomes the great attachment of his life, and reunites with Peter Pienaar, the old South African hunter who is now a flying ace. The title and the chapter epigraphs come from Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, which Hannay carries as a code book. Published in 1919, it is the third Hannay novel and the one most marked by the war itself. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first chapter is free.
