Montreal from 1535 to 1914. Vol. 3. Biographical

by William H. Atherton

About 16 h 48 min of reading401 chapters

This third volume of William H. Atherton's Montreal from 1535 to 1914, published in 1914, is wholly biographical. Where the first two volumes narrate the history of the city from Cartier's landing to the eve of the First World War, this one collects several hundred sketches of the men who were prominent in Montreal at the time of publication or had recently died: bankers and railway builders like Richard B. Angus and Sir Edward Clouston, physicians, lawyers, judges, merchants, manufacturers, clergy and politicians, English and French alike. The sketches were compiled with the cooperation of their subjects in the manner of commercial county histories, and they are uniformly admiring, but they preserve details of parentage, schooling and business found nowhere else. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
