McTeague, published in 1899, is Frank Norris's novel of San Francisco's Polk Street and the first major work of American naturalism. McTeague is a slow, powerful dentist without a license; he marries Trina Sieppe, a Swiss-German girl who wins five thousand dollars in a lottery on the eve of their wedding, and whose thrift hardens into a miser's passion. Their friend Marcus Schouler, who gave Trina up, turns against them, and the loss of McTeague's practice begins a descent through poverty, drink and violence that ends in the heat of Death Valley. Norris wrote under the influence of Zola, with a brutal attention to appetite and heredity. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
