Love-at-arms

by Rafael Sabatini

About 5 h 39 min of reading26 chapters

In the small states of Renaissance Italy, Francesco del Falco, Count of Aquila, is a soldier beloved by the people of Babbiano and distrusted by his cousin, the dissolute Duke Gian Maria who rules it. The Duke intends to marry Valentina della Rovere, niece of the Duke of Urbino, to secure an alliance; Valentina refuses him and barricades herself in the castle of Roccaleone with a handful of followers. Francesco, traveling under a false name, becomes her captain and her defender in a siege full of plots, a treacherous courtier and a court fool who sees more than he says. Sabatini published this early novel in 1907, and it already shows his taste for swordplay, political intrigue and heroes who hide their rank. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
