This first volume of Gaston du C. de Vere's translation, published in 1912, contains Vasari's dedications to Duke Cosimo, his prefaces on the origins and decline of art and on the three arts of design, and the lives from Cimabue to Agnolo Gaddi: Arnolfo di Lapo, Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, Giotto, Andrea Pisano, Buffalmacco, Ambrogio Lorenzetti, Simone Martini, Taddeo Gaddi, Orcagna and Giottino among them. Vasari's anecdotes, judgments and errors have shaped the way the Italian fourteenth century is seen ever since.
