About 9 h 58 min of reading87 chapters

Sabine Baring-Gould, the English clergyman, novelist and collector of folklore, published Legends of Old Testament Characters in 1871. Drawing on the Talmud and Midrash, Muslim tradition, apocryphal books such as the Book of Enoch, and the writings of early Christian authors, he gathers the stories that grew up around the figures of the Hebrew Bible, from the fall of the angels, Adam and Eve and Cain and Abel through Enoch, the giants and Noah to Abraham, Moses and the kings of Israel. The book ends with the many legends of Solomon, his power over demons, the building of the Temple and the Queen of Sheba. Baring-Gould writes as an enthusiastic but critical collector. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
