Lucy Graham, a governess with no known past, marries the elderly and besotted Sir Michael Audley and becomes mistress of Audley Court. Soon afterward George Talboys, a young man back from the Australian goldfields to find his wife dead, vanishes on a visit to the estate. His friend Robert Audley, Sir Michael's idle barrister nephew, begins to ask questions, and the answers lead to a well in the grounds, a disused railway timetable, a locked room and a woman far more dangerous than her golden curls suggest. Published in 1862, the novel was one of the great commercial hits of the Victorian age and a founding work of sensation fiction.
