King Solomon's Mines

by H. Rider Haggard

About 5 h 29 min of reading23 chapters

King Solomon's Mines, published in 1885, was H. Rider Haggard's first success and the book that introduced the hunter and narrator Allan Quatermain. Sir Henry Curtis and the retired naval officer Captain Good engage Quatermain to search for Curtis's brother, who vanished while looking for the legendary diamond mines of King Solomon beyond the deserts and mountains of southern Africa. With them travels the mysterious Zulu Umbopa. The journey takes them across a waterless desert and a frozen pass into the hidden kingdom of Kukuanaland, where the tyrant Twala and the ancient witch Gagool rule and a civil war awaits. Haggard wrote the book in a few weeks on a bet, and it set the pattern for the lost-world adventure story. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
