Introduction to the Literature of Europe in the Fifteenth, Sixteenth, and Seventeenth Centuries, Vol. 1
Introduction to the Literature of Europe in the Fifteenth, Sixteenth, and Seventeenth Centuries, published between 1837 and 1839, is Henry Hallam's survey of European learning and letters from the Middle Ages to the age of Milton. This first volume runs from the state of literature in the Middle Ages through the revival of classical learning in Italy, the invention of printing and the age of Erasmus and Luther to the end of the sixteenth century, treating in successive periods the study of the ancients, theology, philosophy and jurisprudence, poetry, drama, prose and science across Italy, France, Spain, Germany and England. Hallam read in several languages and judged with lawyerly caution; his book was for decades the standard English account of the subject. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
