Home education
Home Education, first published in 1886 and given here in its revised fifth edition of 1906, is the first book of the English educator Charlotte M. Mason, devoted to children under nine. Mason argues that children are persons to be respected, and urges parents to give them long hours out of doors, to train good habits of mind and conduct with patience, and to replace dry textbooks with what she calls living books, along with narration, nature study and short, attentive lessons. The final part turns to the will, the conscience and the religious life of the child. Her ideas still shape many homeschooling families today. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
