This second volume of Henry Martyn Baird's History of the Rise of the Huguenots, published in 1880, covers the years from the Edict of January in 1562 to the death of Charles IX in 1574. Baird, a professor at the University of the City of New York, follows the first religious wars between French Protestants and Catholics, the leadership of Condé and Admiral Coligny, the short-lived peace settlements, the battles of Jarnac and Moncontour, the uneasy peace of 1570, the massacre of St. Bartholomew's Day in 1572 and its aftermath. Writing from a Protestant perspective, he bases his narrative on contemporary memoirs, letters and diplomatic reports, cited in full notes.
