Heinrich Graetz's History of the Jews, written in German in the middle of the nineteenth century, was the first large modern history of the Jewish people, and this English edition was published by the Jewish Publication Society of America. The second volume runs from the reign of John Hyrcanus in 135 BCE to the completion of the Babylonian Talmud around 500 CE. It covers the Hasmonean rulers, the rise of the Pharisees, Sadducees and Essenes, Herod and his successors, the origins of Christianity, the war against Rome and the destruction of the Temple, the revolt of Bar Kochba, the patriarchate and the rabbinic academies of Palestine and Babylonia, ending with the triumph of Christianity in the empire.
