About 30 h 54 min of reading420 chapters

William Whewell, Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, and the man who coined the word scientist, published his History of the Inductive Sciences in 1837 and revised it for this third edition of 1857. The book traces every physical science from its beginnings to his own day as a succession of epochs, each prepared by a prelude, marked by a great discovery and followed by a sequel in which the discovery is developed: the Greek schools and their failure, astronomy from Hipparchus through Copernicus, Kepler and Newton, mechanics, optics, acoustics, heat, electricity, magnetism, chemistry, mineralogy, botany, zoology, physiology and geology. Whewell's theory that science advances by the colligation of facts under new ideas is argued at length in the companion Philosophy. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
