History of the Conquest of Mexico; vol. 1/4
History of the Conquest of Mexico, Vol. 1 is the first of four volumes in a later edition of the work William Hickling Prescott published in 1843, with an editor's preface and notes added. Prescott, nearly blind, built his narrative from Spanish archives he could not visit and manuscripts read aloud to him. This volume contains his long introductory survey of Aztec civilization, its government, religion, calendar, agriculture, arts and manners, with a preliminary notice on the origin of Mexican civilization and its possible analogies with the Old World, followed by the opening of the conquest itself: the early Spanish voyages from Cuba, the character and youth of Cortés, and the departure of his expedition in 1519. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
