It was the first comprehensive account in any language and was translated into Spanish and German. This first volume covers the First Period, from the earliest monuments of Castilian, the Poem of the Cid, Berceo and the court of Alfonso the Wise, through the Archpriest of Hita, the chronicles, the ballads and the romances of chivalry, the early drama and the Celestina, down to the reign of Charles V and the opening of the Second Period.
