About 10 h 36 min of reading66 chapters

The History of Florence was commissioned from Niccolo Machiavelli by the Medici cardinal who became Pope Clement VII and written between 1520 and 1525, appearing after the author's death in 1532. Its eight books begin with the barbarian invasions and the rise of the Italian states, then narrow to Florence, tracing the feuds of Guelphs and Ghibellines, the government of the guilds, the revolt of the Ciompi, the wars with Milan and Lucca, the rise of Cosimo de' Medici, the Pazzi conspiracy and the death of Lorenzo the Magnificent in 1492. Machiavelli reads the city's troubles as lessons about faction and liberty. This edition carries an introduction by Hugo Albert Rennert; the translator is not named. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
