This second volume of Henry Thomas Buckle's History of Civilization in England, first published in 1861, is concerned not with England but with France and Spain, used as contrasts to the English case. Buckle traces the French intellect from the middle of the sixteenth century to the French Revolution, arguing that the protective spirit of church and crown, carried into literature by Louis XIV, stifled inquiry until the reaction after his death prepared the Revolution; he compares the Fronde with the English Civil War. A long final chapter examines the Spanish intellect from the fifth to the nineteenth century as a case of loyalty and superstition arresting progress.
