Hazlitt on English Literature, published in 1913, is an anthology of William Hazlitt's criticism arranged by Jacob Zeitlin of the University of Illinois as a history of English literature in Hazlitt's own words. After an introduction and a chronology of Hazlitt's life, it moves from the age of Elizabeth, Spenser and the characters of Shakespeare's plays, including Iago, Hamlet, Falstaff and the lovers of Romeo and Juliet, through Milton, Pope, the periodical essayists and the English novelists, to Hazlitt's portraits of his contemporaries Burke, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Southey, Lamb, Scott and Byron, and to essays such as "My First Acquaintance with Poets" and "On Reading Old Books." The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
