Ethics

by Benedictus de Spinoza

Translated by R. H. M. ElwesAbout 5 h 52 min of reading29 chapters

The Ethics of Benedictus de Spinoza was published by his friends in 1677, a few months after his death, having been kept back during his lifetime for fear of the reaction. It is laid out like Euclid, in definitions, axioms, propositions and proofs, and in five parts it argues that God and nature are one substance, that mind and body are two aspects of the same thing, that human emotions follow laws as exact as those of geometry, that we are in bondage to those emotions, and that freedom lies in understanding them. The method is forbidding and the conclusions were long thought scandalous. This edition presents the text in R. H. M. Elwes's translation. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
