Daniel G. Brinton, professor of American archaeology and linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania, collected these essays in 1890. They fall into four parts. The first discusses the antiquity of humans in America, stone tools, the supposed Mongolian affinities of Native Americans, the mound builders and the Toltecs. The second treats myth and folklore, including the sacred names of the Quiché, the Algonquian hero as trickster, the journey of the soul, and the folklore of Yucatán and of the modern Lenape. The third concerns Maya and Mexican writing, the Books of Chilan Balam and Native American poetry, and the fourth the structure of American languages.
