Don Quixote
Don Quixote is the story of a provincial gentleman who has read so many romances of chivalry that he decides to become a knight himself, and of Sancho Panza, the farmer who follows him as squire for the promise of an island to govern. Their adventures among windmills, inns, galley slaves and puppet shows are funny, but Cervantes keeps shifting the ground: the knight is mad and also the sanest man present, and the second part, published in 1615, ten years after the first, has its characters meet people who have read the first. This edition presents the text in John Ormsby's translation, long regarded as one of the most faithful in English. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
