Democracy in America — Volume 1
Democracy in America is Alexis de Tocqueville's study of the United States, based on nine months of travel in 1831 and 1832; this first volume was published in 1835 and translated into English the same year by Henry Reeve. Tocqueville describes the physical setting, the Puritan origins of New England, the township, the federal constitution, the parties, the press, political associations and the power of the majority, and then considers the future of the three races, white, Black and Native American, who inhabit the country, with a prophetic chapter on slavery and the Union. He writes as a French aristocrat convinced that equality is coming to Europe whether Europeans like it or not, and curious to see it where it already exists. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
