Cruel as the grave
Cruel as the Grave is a sensation novel by E. D. E. N. Southworth, one of the most widely read American novelists of the nineteenth century. Sybil Berners, young, rich and fiercely jealous, brings her new husband home to her Virginia estate, where a beautiful guest soon seems to be stealing his attention. When the guest is found murdered, suspicion falls on Sybil, and the story becomes one of flight, hiding and a trial. Southworth wrote for serial publication and it shows: the chapters are short, the reversals frequent, and the moral weather violent. First published in book form in 1871, it was continued in a sequel, Tried for Her Life. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
