Friedrich Max Müller, the German-born Oxford scholar of language and religion, collected his shorter writings in the series Chips from a German Workshop. This third volume, subtitled Essays on Literature, Biography, and Antiquities, ranges widely. It opens with essays on German literature, old German love songs and the Ship of Fools, followed by studies of Schiller, of the poet Wilhelm Müller, who was the author's father, and of the chronicler Joinville. Later pieces discuss Shakespeare, Bacon's reputation in Germany, Cornish antiquities and the question of Jews in Cornwall. The volume closes with a memoir of Baron Bunsen and a series of Bunsen's letters to Max Müller from 1848 to 1859. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
