Characteristics of Women: Moral, Poetical, and Historical

by Mrs. Jameson

About 7 h 02 min of reading36 chapters

Characteristics of Women, first published in 1832 and often reprinted as Shakespeare's Heroines, is Anna Jameson's study of the women in Shakespeare's plays. After an introductory dialogue set in a library, she groups them in four classes: characters of intellect, such as Portia, Isabella, Beatrice and Rosalind; of passion and imagination, from Juliet and Viola to Ophelia and Miranda; of the affections, including Hermione, Desdemona, Imogen and Cordelia; and historical characters, from Cleopatra and Volumnia to Margaret of Anjou, Katherine of Aragon and Lady Macbeth. Jameson treats them as real women whose motives can be analyzed, and uses them to argue for women's moral and intellectual capacities.
