Brief Lives, Vol. 2

About 8 h 33 min of reading351 chapters

This is the second volume of Andrew Clark's edition of John Aubrey's Brief Lives, published by the Clarendon Press in 1898 and the first to print the manuscripts in full from the Bodleian Library. Aubrey set down these notes between 1669 and 1696, mostly as material for Anthony Wood's history of Oxford writers, and they are the raw stuff of gossip and memory, often with blanks he meant to fill. The volume runs alphabetically from I to Y and includes James I, Inigo Jones, Ben Jonson, Ralph Kettell of Trinity, the astrologer William Lilly, Richard Lovelace, Sir Thomas More and John Milton, the last an almost contemporary life. Clark keeps Aubrey's spelling and adds notes. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
