An Old Babylonian Version of the Gilgamesh Epic
An Old Babylonian Version of the Gilgamesh Epic, published by Yale University Press in 1920, presents two cuneiform tablets of the early second millennium BC, one in the University of Pennsylvania Museum and one at Yale, that preserve parts of the epic some thousand years older than the Assyrian text from Nineveh through which it was first known. Morris Jastrow supplies an introduction on the composition of the epic and the figures of Gilgamesh and Enkidu, and a commentary; Albert T. Clay provides the transliteration and translation of the two tablets, column by column. The Pennsylvania tablet tells of Enkidu's taming and his meeting with Gilgamesh; the Yale tablet, of their preparations for the journey against Huwawa.
