An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, published in 1690, is John Locke's account of where our ideas come from and how far our knowledge can reach. This first volume contains Books I and II. In the first, Locke attacks the doctrine that any principles or ideas are innate, arguing that children and whole peoples lack notions supposed to be universal. In the second he builds knowledge up from experience: simple ideas come from sensation and from reflection on the mind's own operations, and are combined into the complex ideas of modes, substances and relations, including space, time, number, power, identity and the famous distinction between primary and secondary qualities. The text follows the second edition, with Locke's revisions. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
