Aids to Reflection; and, The Confessions of an Inquiring Spirit
Aids to Reflection, first published in 1825, is Samuel Taylor Coleridge's most sustained work of religious philosophy. Built around aphorisms, many drawn from the seventeenth-century Archbishop Robert Leighton and followed by Coleridge's own commentary, it leads the reader from prudence through morality to spiritual religion, and it develops his famous distinction between the understanding and the reason. This edition adds the preliminary essay by the American philosopher James Marsh, whose edition helped inspire the Transcendentalists, together with the Confessions of an Inquiring Spirit, published after Coleridge's death, which questions the doctrine that every word of the Bible is dictated by God, as well as his Essay on Faith. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
