A Victor of Salamis
A Victor of Salamis, published in 1907, is William Stearns Davis's novel of the Persian invasion of Greece. It opens at the Isthmian Games near Corinth, where the Athenian Glaucon, called the Beautiful, wins the pentathlon and the admiration of Themistocles. From there the story follows him through intrigue in Athens, a false accusation of treason, flight and disguise among the Persians, and back to the great battles of 480 and 479 BC: Thermopylae with Leonidas, the sea fight at Salamis and the final field at Plataea. Davis, a historian, conceived many scenes on the sites themselves and keeps the public events close to Herodotus while inventing a private plot of love, exile and vindication.
