A silent witness

About 7 h 09 min of reading23 chapters

Walking home through Millfield Lane on Hampstead Heath late one September night, Humphrey Jardine, a medical student in his final year, stumbles over the body of a dead man. When he returns with a policeman the body is gone, and no one believes him. A reliquary found in the lane, a cremation, a woman named Sylvia and a series of attempts on Jardine's own life follow, until Dr. Thorndyke takes up the scent. R. Austin Freeman published the novel in 1914; it is told by Jardine rather than by Thorndyke's usual companion Jervis, and it is one of the more atmospheric of the series, with the Heath and the lanes of Highgate drawn from life. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
