A Message to Garcia
Being a Preachment
Elbert Hubbard wrote A Message to Garcia in a single evening in February 1899 for his magazine The Philistine. It retells how Lieutenant Andrew Rowan, sent during the Spanish-American War to carry a message to the Cuban rebel leader García, set off without asking where to find him or how, and it turns the episode into a sermon on initiative and reliability at work. The essay was reprinted by the million and handed out by employers and armies around the world. This edition adds Hubbard's own account of how the piece came to be written, together with two short companion pieces, Horse Sense and Life in Abundance, in the same brisk, exhortatory voice. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
