A History of Epidemics in Britain, Volume 2 (of 2)
From the Extinction of Plague to the Present Time
This second volume of Charles Creighton's A History of Epidemics in Britain, published in 1894, carries his account from the last outbreaks of plague in the 1660s to the end of the nineteenth century. Working through the medical writers, parish registers and bills of mortality of each period, Creighton traces the fevers of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, gaol fever and the typhus of the slums, smallpox and the coming of inoculation and vaccination, measles, scarlet fever and diphtheria, influenza, the great cholera visitations of 1832, 1849 and 1866, and the dysentery and relapsing fever of the Irish famine. Creighton was a skeptic about germ theory and vaccination, and some conclusions have not aged well, but his collection of sources remains unmatched. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
