A History of Art in Chaldaea and Assyria, Vol. 1 is the first part of the second installment of the survey of ancient art by Georges Perrot and Charles Chipiez, published in French in 1884 and in English the same year in the translation of Sir Walter Armstrong. The authors begin with the land between the Tigris and Euphrates, the peoples who settled it, the cuneiform writing, the history and religion of Babylon and Nineveh, and the government and daily life of their inhabitants. The rest of the volume is devoted to architecture: the brick and bitumen of Mesopotamian building, the arch and the vault, the decoration of palace walls, the staged temple towers and the tombs. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
