William Temple Hornaday (1854–1937) was an American zoologist, taxidermist and pioneer of wildlife conservation. After collecting expeditions in India, Ceylon, Malaya and Borneo, he became chief taxidermist of the United States National Museum, where his study of the near extinction of the bison led him to campaign for its protection; he helped found the American Bison Society. From 1896 to 1926 he was the first director of the New York Zoological Park, later the Bronx Zoo, and his books, including Our Vanishing Wild Life, rallied support for laws protecting wild animals.
