William Noyes was an American educator in the manual-training movement of the early twentieth century, teaching woodworking at Teachers College, Columbia University, in New York. His Handwork in Wood (1910) was written for teachers and students of the subject and became a standard text, following the material from the forest through logging, sawmilling and seasoning to the tools, joints, structures and finishes of the shop, with a bibliography for each chapter. He also published Wood and Forest, a companion volume on the trees of the United States and their timbers. His books are distinguished by their clear drawings and their insistence that students understand the material before they cut it.
