William MacLeod Raine (1871–1954) was a British-born American author of Westerns. Born in London, he emigrated with his family to Arkansas as a boy, studied at Oberlin College and, after moving to Colorado for his health, worked as a newspaper reporter in Denver. From the early 1900s he wrote some eighty novels of the American West, including Wyoming, A Texas Ranger, The Highgrader and Oh, You Tex!, several of them filmed, as well as nonfiction such as Famous Sheriffs and Western Outlaws. With their likable cowboys, clear-cut villains and brisk action, his books were a mainstay of the genre for half a century.
