William Andrew Chatto (1799–1864) was an English writer born at Newcastle upon Tyne. After some years in the tea trade in London he devoted himself to literature, often under the pen name Stephen Oliver. He wrote books on angling and country sports, a history of playing cards, and, with the engraver John Jackson, the Treatise on Wood Engraving, Historical and Practical, first published in 1839, which long remained the standard history of the art. He also edited a humorous magazine and wrote light verse and sketches of London life.
