Wentworth Webster (1828–1907) was an English clergyman and scholar of the Basque country. Educated at Oxford, he settled in the French Basque region, where he served for many years as Anglican chaplain at Saint-Jean-de-Luz, and devoted himself to the language, history and traditions of the Basque people. His Basque Legends (1877), gathered from oral tellers in the province of Labourd and published with an essay on the Basque language by Julien Vinson, preserved tales of the one-eyed Tartaro, the wild man Basa-Jaun and the fairy Lamiñak. He also wrote on Basque history, music and the pilgrim roads of the region.
