Walter Lynwood Fleming (1874–1932) was an American historian of the South. Born in Alabama, he studied at the Alabama Polytechnic Institute and at Columbia under William A. Dunning, whose students produced the state histories of Reconstruction that dominated the field for half a century. Fleming taught at West Virginia, Louisiana State and Vanderbilt, where he was dean of the graduate school. Civil War and Reconstruction in Alabama, published in 1905, was the most thorough of the Dunning school studies, and he also edited the two-volume Documentary History of Reconstruction and wrote The Sequel of Appomattox. His sympathy for the white South has since been strongly criticized.
