Walter Bagehot (1826–1877) was an English journalist, economist and political writer. The son of a banker in Somerset, he studied at University College London, worked in his family's banking business and in 1861 became editor of The Economist, a post he held until his death. His English Constitution, published in 1867, described how British government actually worked, distinguishing its dignified from its efficient parts, and Lombard Street explained the workings of the money market and the role of the Bank of England. Physics and Politics and his literary essays also showed his originality.
