W. N. Hutchinson was a British army officer who rose to the rank of major-general and had served as a colonel in the Grenadier Guards. A keen sportsman, he wrote Dog Breaking, a manual on training pointers, setters and retrievers for the gun, first published in 1848 and reissued in many revised and enlarged editions. The book is practical and anecdotal, full of observations from the field and asides on shooting and gamekeeping, and it remained a standard work for sportsmen for decades. Few other details of his life appear in standard reference works.
