William Hamilton Gibson (1850–1896) was an American illustrator, naturalist and writer, born in Sandy Hook, Connecticut. He began as a scientific illustrator and became known for his finely detailed drawings of plants, insects and country scenes in Harper's magazines. His books, which he illustrated himself, include Pastoral Days, Highways and Byways, Sharp Eyes, Strolls by Starlight and Sunshine, and My Studio Neighbors, all combining close observation of nature with a warm, storytelling style. He was also a popular lecturer who drew as he spoke. Blending the roles of artist and naturalist, he encouraged readers to look closely at common things.
