She began publishing children's stories around 1900 and her first novel, Judy, appeared in 1907. Contrary Mary, Mistress Anne, The Tin Soldier, The Trumpeter Swan, The Dim Lantern and The Blue Window were among her bestsellers, and her stories appeared regularly in the Saturday Evening Post, Harper's and Scribner's, several of them collected in The Gay Cockade (1921). She wrote wholesome, sentimental fiction about young women, work and marriage and never married herself.
