Thomas Rice Edward Holmes (1855–1933) was an English historian who taught classics at St Paul's School in London for more than thirty years and wrote his scholarly books in his spare time. A History of the Indian Mutiny, published in 1883, went through five editions. He then turned to the age of Caesar, producing Caesar's Conquest of Gaul in 1899, Ancient Britain and the Invasions of Julius Caesar in 1907, an edition of Caesar's Commentaries, and the three volumes of The Roman Republic and the Founder of the Empire, followed by The Architect of the Roman Empire on Augustus. His books are known for their exhaustive discussions of disputed questions.
